Quality & inspection

Four checkpoints. Your money moves only after each one.

Inspection that happens at the end is not inspection, it is an argument. Ours happens at four fixed points during production, and the reports arrive before the next payment is due.

The four checkpoints

What is checked, and what you receive.

This sequence is written into your contract. It is the same for a 480 sq ft ADU and for a three-container house.

Checkpoint What we check What you receive
01 · Incoming materials Steel coil and section thickness against the drawings, galvanising class and coating weight stated in the specification, board and insulation specifications, window and door certifications Material certificates, measured thickness photographs, batch numbers
02 · Frame welding and forming Panel dimensions against the drawings, square and plumb tolerances, screw and rivet pattern, weld quality on any welded connection, treatment of cut edges Dimensional report, photographs of frames laid out and measured, tolerance record
03 · Panel and insulation assembly Insulation grade and thickness actually installed, vapour barrier continuity, sheathing fixing, window and door openings, services rough-in positions Photographic record of assemblies before closing, insulation batch labels
04 · Pre-shipment loading Piece count against the packing list, panel numbering against the erection sequence, lashing and protection, container weight against the limit Packing list, container photographs, weight ticket, third-party inspection certificate

Checkpoint 04 is carried out by an independent third-party agency, not by us. You receive their certificate, not only our report.

Documents you receive

Everything you need, before the container sails.

  • Structural calculations and panel drawings, sealed where your jurisdiction requires it
  • Erection drawings with panel numbers matched to the loading plan
  • Material certificates for steel, insulation, windows and doors
  • Third-party pre-shipment inspection certificate
  • Packing list with piece count and container weight
  • Photographic record at all four checkpoints
  • Loading plan and unloading sequence for your site crew
  • Certificate of origin and full commercial documentation set
What we can guarantee, and what we cannot. We can guarantee that the building is made to the drawings you approved, from the materials stated in your specification, counted and packed as documented. We cannot guarantee that a local inspector will not ask for something the drawings did not anticipate, or that a panel will not be scratched in transit. What we can do is make sure the record exists — so that when something is wrong, the answer is on the packing list rather than in an argument.
Buy marine cargo insurance. It is inexpensive relative to the shipment and it is the only thing standing between you and a steamship line's liability limits. We will show you the cost as a separate line so you can decide for yourself.

If you want to inspect it yourself

You are welcome to attend production during your build, and we will arrange it. If you cannot travel — and most of our buyers cannot — we will run a live video walkthrough of your building at checkpoint 02 and checkpoint 04, on your schedule, with the drawings on screen beside it.

You may also appoint your own inspection agency. If you do, send them our drawings; we would rather have two sets of eyes on it than one.

Ask for a sample report. Before you place an order, ask us for a redacted inspection report from a previous project. A supplier who cannot show you one has never produced one.
